Best 21st Century Horror Movies
Here's my list of the best horror movies of the 21st century to date. All these are movies I've rated as five star films. We're only in the second decade of the 21st century, so hopefully there are plenty more treats to come! I'm not going to try to sort these into a particular order other than alphabetical, all are excellent and well worth watching.
- AfterDeath (2015)
It might not be everyone's idea of horror, but this character piece about five dead people scared the hell out of me. Full review
- Age Of The Dead (2015)
A very dark post apocalyptic film where the people are a lot worse than the zombies. Full review
- Another World (2014)
Smart and stylish, essentially meditation on the meaning of life wrapped up in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Full review
- Avenged (2013)
I expected Michael S. Ojeda's rape-murder-revenge story to be just another piece of braindead torture porn but it surprised me with its intelligent script. Full review
- The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Joss Whedon's clever script plays with a wide variety of subgenres and keeps you guessing as to what's really going on.
- Containment (2015)
Bleak character led story about a group of people trapped in a tower block that has been sealed by the authorities.Full review
- Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Zack Snyder's remake of the George A. Romero classic annoyed some by having running zombies but it's full of energy and very stylish.Full review at Zombirity
- The Killing Room (2009)
A psychological thriller that will appeal to cynical, paranoid conspiracy theorists.
- Paranormal Activity (2007)
The original and best of the franchise subtly generates a truly frightening atmosphere.
- Save The Green Planet (2003)
A truly bizarre Korean that blends alien invasion with serial killers and some very dark humour. Full review
- The Dead (2010)
A fairly traditional zombie story in the very untraditional setting of Africa. Full review
- Triangle (2009)
Triangle is that rare thing, an original and intelligent horror movie that will keep you guessing.
- Unfriended (2014)
Unfriended is an internet revenge movie that plays out in real time on a single computer screen. Full review
- Vampires (2010)
This Beglian faux documentary about a family of vampires is clever, dark and funny. Full Review
- Wyrmwood (2014)
A lot smarter and more interesting than the 'Mad Max with zombies' tag suggests. Full Review
- Yellowbrickroad (2010)
Yellowbrickroad is a compelling and surreal vision of descent into madness - and possibly worse. If you like nightmares made real then this is one to watch.
- Zombies Anonymous (2006)
The social and political commmentary in this superb indie zombie movie is even more relevant now than when it was made. Full Review
