Zombeavers (2014)

You’ll all be dammed!

Writers: Al Kaplan, Jon Kaplan, Jordan Rubin
Director: Jordan Rubin

With a film call Zombeavers you know exactly what you’re going to get. In case anyone missed the point the opening credits are suitably cartoonish. We get our first tit shot after 12 minutes and our first beaver gag after 16.

The set up involves three sorority sisters and their pet dog who go to a lakeside cabin for a weekend getaway. What they don’t know is that a toxic chemical spill has turned the local beavers into vicious undead monsters…

It could actually be quite good fun. An early nod to the mighty Bruce Campbell in the name of the town – Ashwood – suggests that the makers know the genre. The human actors do a decent job and the zombie beaver models are suitably silly (think Roland Rat on PCP).

Unfortunately the majority of the film is neither funny nor interesting. The sex obsessed characters are unlikeable and the humour is mainly of the crude, juvenile variety. The movie’s made and acted well enough, the problem is the script which for the most part is slow and unfunny. To be fair the last 15 minutes are pretty good, but the first hour is a slog to sit through.

But if the filmmakers’ target audience was drunk 16 year old boys then they nailed it.
